Breaking Down the Trends: Victoria Beckham Fall 2012

Breaking Down the Trends: Victoria Beckham Fall 2012
Victoria Beckham just showed her Fall 2012 collection at New York Fashion Week. Although she only debuted 20 looks for the collection, the dresses, because that’s what she makes (not pants, skirts or outerwear), were succinct and straight to the point. Her label- Victoria, Victoria Beckham, is wildly popular due to her ability to focus on just a few trends and work them into her dresses to perfection.

The silhouettes weren’t voluminous like they have been in the past, but very slim and cut straight up and down. Long sleeve dresses and drop waists with pleats were at the heart of her collection. The colors weren’t sharp, brights for Spring, but a more subdued palette that will work perfectly for Fall.

My absolute favorite trend from the collection was the contrasting cuffs and collars. They are exactly what’s hot now and easy enough for even the most non fashion-forward person to pull off. An easy way to get the look, without shelling out big bucks for a new wardrobe, is to layer a collared shirt under a different colored dress. You can roll the sleeves up so that the contrasting cuff shows from underneath, and just make sure the collar is pulled out and showing from under the dress. If you wear hijab, just tuck in a small scarf- maybe one that was so small you weren’t sure exactly what to do with it before. The less bulky it is, the better.

Christian Dior Spring 2012 Couture

Christian Dior Spring 2012 Couture
We’re back to blogging just in time to give you a peek into the world of Haute Couture, starting with Christian Dior!

Christian Dior Spring 2012 Couture

Classic houndstooth, sheer pieces and exaggerated full skirts were the name of the game at the Christian Dior Couture show in Paris. Although Bill Gaytten being the interim designer is most definitely not Galliano, he did an impeccable job with this collection. It didn’t have the crazy wildness of a Galliano show, but a more quiet drama, kind of like the tortoise and the hare, with Gaytten slowly but steadily winning the race. If that makes any sense. And who knows, what with Dior still not having a head designer…

Christian Dior Spring 2012 Couture

The tough crocodile and leather is offset by diaphanous skirts and dresses. Gaytten created clothing that real people can, and will, actually wear. After the show, he said- “It’s meant to be x-ray Dior, all the structure of iconic Dior, thanks to lots of fittings, but all of it see-through.” The tones of nude, grey, plum and black with pops of red give us a lot to look forward to this spring. Taming the usual pastel, floral Spring beast, Gaytten brings back old school charm, sophistication and grown-up glamour.

I’d love to know what you guys think of the collection- I’m ready for your comments!

Let’s Party Like it’s 2012

If you’re going to any parties for New Year’s Eve or anytime soon, chances are you’re still wavering over what to wear. I know I don’t pin down a complete outfit until the night or day of the actual event. And if you have not a clue what you’re wearing, I’ve got a few outfit ideas I’ll be sharing with you in the hopes you’ll find some inspiration for yourself!

Kardashians

To begin, let’s take a cue from the Kardashians wearing some not so surprisingly modest clothes. (See, I resisted using ‘kue,’ I do seem to have some self restraint). Above are Kim and Kourtney wearing two of my favorite looks! A wrap dress and a maxi skirt. So how can you work these looks into your night?

New Year's Eve Party

For Kourtney’s look, try a pleated or ruffled long skirt in black or navy. A darker color gives it a more wintery, sophisticated feel. Top it with a silky white button down and a sparkly clutch. For a fancier effect, add a bib necklace so it peeks out from under the collar, and roll up the sleeves to show off some pretty bangles.

To get Kim’s monochromatic look, try a wrap dress and shoes in the same color family. Or a dark dress with glittery pumps for a touch of sparkle. Let the jewelry take center stage with a stack of thick bracelets, or single cuff, a statement ring, earrings, and finish off the look with a bright red lip.

Abayas

Or got a completely different look and instead of a wrap dress, why not try an open abaya, like the Songes one above, and wrap it shut using a bright ribbon for contrast. Or for a more modest look, this Surbhi Jaggi number will keep you covered and looking just as chic.

What are you wearing for 2011′s last parties?

How to Travel in Style

How many of you are traveling over the holidays? I am! And I’m going somewhere with a completely different climate. You might think I’m going somewhere warm and sunshiny, but that’s not actually the case. I come from a warm place and I’m jetting off to somewhere cold and chilly! One of the hardest things for me is packing. I never know how much to pack and always end up over-packing…and still forgetting at least one essential. Sometimes I even use a checklist, and then waver over a few items, don’t pack them, and end up regretting not bringing it along.

The second most difficult thing when it comes to traveling is what to wear at the airport. I need something comfortable, that doesn’t wrinkle, and is easy to wear. Here are two of my favorite looks for the airport (above and below). Do you have any favorites that you always wear when figuring out your travel outfits? I always go for something comfortable above all, but always try to keep it fashionable.

Do you have a checklist you follow? Or do you pull a Rachel Zoe and bring ten suitcases for a three day trip?

The Abaya Reinvented with Nabrman

Nabrman’s show at Dubai Fashion Week in April was one of my favorites. The designs shown on the runway were elegant, and as always, perfectly glamorous. Take a look at the video below to see the full runway collection.

Nabrman, meaning “white flower” in Turkish, is the creation of two Emirati women. Traditional Arab dress, reinvented, is what Nabrman does best. The seemingly simple silhouettes are anything but. Eye-catching brights peeking out between layers of lush black draping, delicate pleating and tiny details like rosettes, or bows, are what really make Nabrman stand out.

I mean, we’re not the only ones who love them- hello Kim Kardashian! During her visit to Dubai, Kim famously donned a Nabrman abaya, which made for some very incongruous photos. In actuality, Nabrman designer, Hend Al Mutawa designed abayas for Kim and her mom Kris, but she wasn’t sure they would actually wear them. Imagine her surprise when not only did they try them on, but decided to take a stroll wearing them as well! According to Dubib.com, Hend said- “When I heard they were coming to the UAE, I thought why not design something that they can take back home as a souvenir; something that will make them remember the UAE and an abaya is one of the symbols of our culture and traditions.”

You don’t have to wait to buy your own Nabrman abayas! Check this out to see some of their prettiest pieces right here on 3abaya.com!
